As an older person who often strolls along just like this I have to say that hands clutched behind the back helps to keep one from falling face down on the concrete.
In reality it relieves the stress on the back to remain upright!
I'm an American woman who's lived and worked in Serbia for over 35 years. I've come to love the people with all their idiosyncrasies, and created this blog to help break some of the negative press about Serbs. I take requests for photos!

«Louis» has often noticed that elderly Chinese in the San Francisco Chinatown walk like this as well.
For a better concentration? Tres belle image qui parle.
so beautifully captured. i, too, walk like this when i'm strolling without my camera...particularly when i'm engrossed in conversation with a friend.
this is such a good photo ...
Wonderful shot Bibi, there would be an expert on body language somewhere who would know exactly why this position is used.
