Stubborn

I've lived here for nearly 38 years....  Gotten used to a lot, but one thing that still irks me is the Serbs' stubbornness.

I often pass this restaurant on the pedestrian street, Knez Mihailova.  This chalkboard has two sides--one menu in Serbian, the other in English....almost.  Would most foreigners know what 'przenice' is??

For your information, 'przenice' is French toast. I called over a waiter and pointed this out and told him I'd be happy to write it down for him.  At this point he got very indignant and said, "Well, we have photos if they don't understand."  I countered, "Fine, but isn't it easier just to write it in English? And then why don't you have, for example, 'kajgan' for omelet, too?"  He got huffy and showed me the photos....  He said he'd change it...I'll be strolling back.

I asked if I could take a photo since I have a photoblog and thought my readers might get a chuckle out of this....and to that he agreed.  (?)  I should have asked him to pose, but didn't want to push my luck.

There are two other mistakes I told him to look for....do you see them?

Skadarlija in the a.m.

Skadarlija is Belgrade's Bohemian quarter, though it has only an air of its former self. Here the little souvenir stands are still closed up...but there seems to be (another) photographer at work.

Sunday in the Park

Well, it's Sunday today, but this photo is from a few days ago....  Liked this old man who was sitting on the bench next to me, decked out in his white pants and tennis shoes.

Everything you need to enjoy a walk in the park.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS--like a broken mirror

No seven years bad luck here; just a reflection in a puddle on a side street in Belgrade.

SKYWATCH--up close and personal

Took my dog and my Nikon P510 with the super zoom on a walk today.  The camera yielded this very close-up of a cross on a church in Kalemegdan Park; the dog didn't do much.

Once enlarged...

Bored, and only with my 35mm, since I have not dug out the rest of my camera equipment yet (still unpacking boxes after my apartment renovation--where ARE those lenses....?), I took a photo out my kitchen window.

It's only when I zoomed in that I saw the juxtaposition between the sign and the couple on their little rooftop terrace.  The sign reads, "There's only one life, take only the best."  The billboard is for a furniture store.

A rose by any other name....

These little doughnuts without a hole are simply called 'mini-krofne' (mini doughnuts) here, but their counterparts in France are called 'pets de nonne' or nun's puffs, a euphemism for 'nun's farts'. They're so light and airy. ;)

SKYWATCH--from a terrace

Special thanks to my friend Jasmina for this photo, taken from her terrace.  Believe it or not, I'm still not back in my own apartment, renovations drag on....  All that bother leaves me little time for photos.

Bear with me!

Blue in Bohinj

Alas, I am not visiting Lake Bohinj in Slovenia, since I am here in Belgrade not-so-patiently waiting to re-enter my 'being renovated' apartment. This photo was kindly sent to me by Alex Tomic, whose husband, Ian Andersen took it. Nice job, Ian!

Made for me...

Coca Cola has been placing names on their bottles.  They've also expanded to use words like Superstar and Cool Guy, for example.

This one says "Blogger" (female) and so I think it was made for me and my female blogger friends.
