ABC WEDNESDAY--"P" is for 'petting'

This street cleaner took the time to pet this little kitten on Knez Mihailova.

Happy Halloween to those who celebrate!

Chairs

I liked the arrangement of these metallic-looking chairs stacked outside a cafe.

Happy Birthday...to the one on the right!

Oh, my....time flies.... and it wasn't so long ago, or so it seems, that my daughter, whose birthday it is today, was just as small as her son, Luka, now just over five months old.

I get all weepy thinking how short of a time we are all here and how we should enjoy every moment.

Happy Birthday to you, daughter of mine.  Mama loves you...and yours.

Now you see him, now you don't.

Dositej  Obradović  (DOSS-ee-tay o-BRA-doe-vitch) (1742 –1811) was a Serbian author, philosopher, linguist, traveler, polyglot and the first minister of education of Serbia. Above are two versions of his statue!

SUNDAY BRIDGES--a cow, a man, a bridge....

What could be better for Louis La Vache's SUNDAY BRIDGES than a cow and a bridge...and a man thrown in as well?

That's the bridge to Pancevo in the background that you've seen a few times before.

And do you remember this post from long ago and far away? Another cow....a woman...and a bridge.

WEEKEND REFLECTION--twice shot

"Shot" this man while he was absorbed in using his cell phone....and inadvertently shot myself, too.

SKYWATCH--It's not a water tower, Daryl.

My 'blister' (=blogger sister, according to Daryl in New York City) features 'Water Tower Wednesday', which I've never been able to contribute to since there aren't any here, at least the kind on top of buildings that abound in NYC.

So this will have to do. I honestly don't know its purpose...some sort of view tower? And the PUB is not a pub, but rather initials I can't locate the meaning for.

Anyway, on Wednesdays go see Daryl's Water Tower Wednesday. Actually, stop in any day.

Check out more skies at SKYWATCH.

Where do you buy your newspaper, if you still do?

I still buy a paper newspaper rather than read online. A local one, at least; American ones I read online.

But my online versions don't have a smiling person like Mladje, my local newspaper man.  (And yes, I gave him a photo!)

ABC WEDNESDAY--"N" is for "Niš"

Pretty spooky.  These skulls are part of a gruesome tower built by the Turks after the Battle of Cegar Hill (CHEH-gar) near the city of Nis (NEESH) in 1809.

This warning to future Serbian rebels was erected using over 900 skulls of slain Serbs, but only 52 remain.  Check out the whole story on this site.

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple...I think....

Or maybe bright green, what the heck!  If you'd like to read the entire "When I am an old woman" poem, click right here.

Wanna play ball?

On the same trip to the zoo that brought you this zoo tale, I had the occasion to see this male lion, father of six (I think that's right) white lions, who are fairly grown up now, in contrast to those that appear in this video.
Looks like dad isn't interested in playing ball.

SUNDAY BRIDGES--The Bridge on the River Drina

Four years ago (Yikes, time flies!) I showed you this statue of Ivo Andric, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1961.  His best-known novel is undoubtedly The Bridge on the River Drina. My friend Jasmina sent me this photo of the bridge on the River Drina taken by her friend Zora.

Thanks to both of you ladies for this photo!

The original 'Dock Worker'

I don't know about you, but I often find the story behind the story of some of my photos.  In 2010, I posted this statue that I called The Dock Worker, since the plaque was missing.

On October 4th I posted that I'd been to the October Salon, a visual arts event that's been taking place since the Sixties. Inside as part of one exhibit was this photo that I rephotographed that shows the man who posed for this statue (he's on the left, but I think the fellow on the right may have had some influence, too).

His name, I believe, is Milorad, and he's still active in the art world.

ABC WEDNESDAY--"M" is for Milosh"

This is Milosh, a man I often see watching a group of chess players in Kalemegdan Park on my Bibi walks.  He asked me to take his photo, and so I did, and he is holding it in this photo.  People have such fascinating stories....  His mother was an American Jew, who worked at the American Embassy in Belgrade during WWII and who married a Ukranian Jew, and then along came Milosh.  WWII of course meant hard times for Jews, but Milosh and his family were saved by a German officer.  He had many a tale to tell....

Two girls from Turkey

I often get asked for information while walking and so it was a short while ago in Kalemegdan Park when the girl on the right asked me where the mosque was. I knew, so I offered to walk them in that direction.  These two young girls, whose names I neglected to get, were students of architecture in Bosnia and had come to Belgrade for a few days.

I left them my card, so girls, if you see this, write to me at my email address and I'll send you your photos!

A really GOOD idea....!

Still overdue, but open....sort of....

Two years ago I showed you this building from the outside and hoped that it would indeed one day be renovated and that I could get in.  As you see, I did, for the building, still in disrepair, housed part of this year's October Salon Art Exhibit.  The Salon, begun in the Sixties, is truly a major point of reference for artists, experts and art lovers from all over Europe and is held in various venues around town.

Want to see more of the inside?  Here's the link to my Flickr photos. Worth a look.

ABC WEDNESDAY "L" is for "Locked up..."

This has to be one of the saddest photos I've ever posted.  While taking my granddaughter, Mila, now 14 months, to the zoo the other day (happier post is coming), we came across the primate house at the Belgrade Zoo.  Its conditions are nothing short of shameful to house these intelligent creatures. I'm going to write  to them and to the newspaper and send this photo.  To be fair, the zoo has made major improvements on its outdated enclosures both indoor and out, but why they didn't start with the primates is beyond me.

In any case, see perhaps happier L's on ABC WEDNESDAY.
