Impressions of Belgrade and Serbia and maybe photos from an in-country trip by a long-term ex-pat.

Old....
This is a shot taken of part of old Belgrade from across the Sava River. The weather conditions and lighting make the buildings look very decrepit, which sadly, they are....
In the distance can be seen the larger dome of Saint Marko's church and the spire of the Belgrade parliament.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS--the Tamis River
The Tamiš (TAH-meesh) is a 339 km long river originating from the southern Carpathian Mountains in Romania. It flows through the Banat region of Serbia andinto the Danube near Pančevo, in northern Serbia, where this photo was taken last week.

A job I would not like
This of course is a close-up of a fellow removing an advertisement from a building near me....he's on the fifth floor.... I wouldn't like this job.
But I'd probably be out there watching, too, like the guy on the terrace who is actually watching me...

Bygone days....
Every time I look around at a new chrome and glass apartment building, I feel sorry that old-fashioned doorways and facades are fast disappearing here.....

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY--Open
Nothing unusual about seeing an 'Open' sign, but I've often wondered why they don't put up a neon sign in Serbian. Anyway, everybody knows what 'open' means.
This doorway is the same one I showed you a few weeks ago.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS-what we do in the trolley bus
Each to his own pastime in the trolley. Which one of these people would be you?

SKYWATCH---very pale
Another shot with my tiny Minox on a drizzly day today. The sky really is that pale....

ABC WEDNESDAY--"F" is for "fiery"
Fiery hot! But this pepper wasn't. Serbian peppers like this are either sweet ones (not hot) or really hot (not this one....).
But the red makes it look hot....maybe even sexy.

Angels are watching.
Do you believe in guardian angels? Some do. I wonder if this man has one, other than the great big one watching him here.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS---no more....
Zora, like so many other Belgrade landmarks, has slipped into oblivion, and only its name remains....a pale imitation of its former self.

ABC WEDNESDAY--"E" is for "Eat me" or....ewwww.....
There's a place in Belgrade's Bohemian quarter, Skadarlija, that has been around for years. For many years, they baked the best bread and sold various cheese-type spreads to make sandwiches with the bread. Yum.
They also made goulash, served in the fashion you see above. They still make it.....but I stopped in around 10 a.m. after my dog walk, just starving. Ordered one. It was really good, but the beef was nowhere to be found....there were sliced kidneys....which I don't mind; ate it all. The sign said 'goulash', to be fair, but no mention of kidneys....

Two ladies and a dog
Two and a half men yesterday, now two ladies with a dog. Sorry for the blur. Had my 11-16 with me, and they were across the street, so this is a big crop.

Two and a half men
From the sit-com comes the title. This is another hip shot of mine, not unnoticed.... I'm sorry I couldn't get all three of these men in. I should have just been bold and asked for a photo (in exchange for a beer for them). When I do that, though, people often strike strange, frozen poses.
In any case, what caught my eye was their natural poses. There's some trace of elegance in them; hands folded just so, legs crossed....

SKYWATCH---New Belgrade 'on the sea'
Caught these low-lying clouds the other morning and it made it appear that the buildings of New Belgrade in the distance are afloat on the sea, with an island of trees before them.

The floating table
Well, not really. Just a display table set for two with a bottle of wine standing (not floating) outside the dark window of a restaurant downtown.

I'm here...was and still am....
Today is my birthday. I'll let you guess which one from the postmark.
I received this from my aunt yesterday in the mail.... My mother sent this announcement out just after I was born. She passed away two years ago, and I'm glad in some way that she 'showed up' for my birthday.

THEME DAY-- scene from a coffee house
Hotel Moskva here in Belgrade is just what it says--a hotel, but with a splendid pastry and coffee shop as well, so...
Was having coffee with a friend and this kid just kept staring at my camera....and sticking out his tongue.... I caught him just as he was about to do so again, and so did his mother.....who didn't seem to mind.... ?

CROSS-CULTURE BREAKFAST
Have been in India one week. I brought my hostess some ajvar, which she found goes very well on a chapati.
