ABC Wednesday "J" is for "Jugoexport"

The 'j' in Jugoexport is pronounced as a 'Y'. Be that as it may, Jugoexport is one of the most renowned fashion houses in the country, and is now experiencing its renaissance on the domestic market. This is a close-up of part of its sign that stands atop its building just off of Belgrade's pedestrian street, Knez Mihailova.

In terms of real estate value, the property in and around Knez Mihailova Street is among the most expensive in Belgrade. In late November 2007, the 485 square meter parcel belonging to Jugoexport was sold for €15 million, which works out to some €32,000 per square meter.

I just love your Blog because not only are your photographs always interesting, but you also provide fascinating information. I already know a lot about Belgrade after visiting your Blog for just a few weeks. Definitely makes me want to go there!

I must ask my parents about this place. I have a feeling they might remember such a landmark.

Hmmm...my ignorance is showing again, but why this sculpture at a fashion house?

You're real estate is about as expensive as ours was...the bottom sort of dropped out over here...

Would love to see some Serbian fashion featured here! Love the picture. By chance is the "Jugo" is a carry over from Yugoslavia?

A pricey place for sure! Lovely photo, as always.

Hi, Jacob an Greensboro!

The building wasn't originally made for Jugoexport, hence the statue (actually there are two; another is on the other side of the sign) on top of the building.

Yes, Jugo is short for (former) Jugoslavija.

Hi Bibi - I did come by yesterday & Googled more on the building. Unbelievable price, just unbelievable!
The "Jug" & the sculpture came out great. - funny I immediately completed that in my mind as Jugoslavia.

That's a great photo! I love the old-fashioned script on the sign.

Not everything is going down in value, then?

Wow, what an expensive piece of real estate...if only I owned something that rich...I'd sell it and move into something more affordable! Then I'd use the extra money to travel. Ah...if only I had extra money to travel abroad every year.

I love this photo so much. It has a mixture of old (carved statues) and new (neon lighting).
