Impressions of Belgrade and Serbia and maybe photos from an in-country trip by a long-term ex-pat.

Signs of the times
Can't escape Coca-Cola, however you may feel about that. Nine teaspoons of sugar in a small bottle/can of Coke.
I'll take my sugar in the form of one Turkish Delight, or maybe two....to go with my Turkish coffee I drank in Sarajevo on a recent trip.

ABC WEDNESDAY--"X" is for "Danger"
The skull and crossbones on this sign by the side of the road in Prozor, Bosnia/Herzegovina, warns not to walk in that area, due to the possibility of mines..... The area of course was swept following the 1990s wars, but who wants to take the risk?

Counting sheep....or "The Grass is Always Greener"...
If you're trying to count sheep, keep a look-out for the ones hopping the fence....to where the grass is always greener.
These were spotted in Bosnia, near Prozor Rama, where I visited recently.

My presents
My granddaughter, Mila, returned from her week-long excursion with her pre-school group. She had promised to bring me a rock, and I also got a magnet and a candy watch......
Bless her. :)

On vacation
Not me, though I've just returned from a short one and will be off again when family from the US comes over.
This image was sent to my son by his daughter's daycare teacher, who is positively super. Here in Serbia, socialized day cares offer low-cost excursions of several days or, in this case, a week to their little pupils. My almost-six-year-old grand-daughter, Mila, is now at Sokobanja (SO-KO-bahn-ya), a spa about four hours from Belgrade. It's a popular place; click on that link. Lots for all ages to do: nature walks, water fun in pools and out, sports, etc. all while breathing in fresh air.
Here's a shout out to Mila's teacher, who has gone the extra mile by really keeping parents posted, and also by taking kids on her on volition to a nearby amusement park.
I wish I were six again....

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY--darkness and light
Symbolically, this elderly gentleman like many others his age, walks both in the shadows and in the light.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS--reflecting on life....
I often see this fellow sitting along a busy street near me and at first wondered why he wouldn't choose a quieter place.
But I think he has found inner peace, and has blocked out all that's going on around him.

Smarter than you thought?
Snails can read! I watched this little fellow work his way through this text, and I have no reason to doubt he can read....

ABC WEDNESDAY---W is for Wall
Another sorry shot....this was once a beautiful building, long ago, with its reliefs and detail.
Now it's been painted....and not in a good way.

In Vogue
Not necessarily Vogue magazine, but she's definitely stylish.
Of course as soon as I try to sneak a shot, it often happens that the person turns around. This lovely young woman did notice me, but didn't object.

ABC WEDNESDAY--V is for Vulkanizer
In English, there is no specific word for a person who repairs tires . Vulcan was the god of fire in mythology, and fire of course is used to convert rubber into more durable materials by adding sulfur. The process is known as vulcanization.
I'm sorry we don't have a word for this kind of repairman. My friends and I simply say, when in need of one, that we're going to the vulkanizer!

HOTEL BALKAN....no more....
Oh, this is a sad one for me. Hotel Balkan was one of Belgrade's oldest, and this part had been a cafe (and very nice restaurant waaay back there), called The Orient Express. I'd posted about this place before.
It seems it's going to be revamped....one more piece of history may bite the dust. I took this photo through the front door window.

MONDAYMURALS--the rose wall
I really like this house, an old one from 1910, whose garden in the summer turns into a cafe.
Oddly enough, I'd never noticed the mural before...or maybe it wasn't there.
