Took this photo about a year ago in Novi Sad, a city 70 kms to the north of Belgrade, where my husband grew up. Recently my kids and I took a trip up there in his honor a few days after his funeral. Ivan (my husband) and I had laughed hard at this sign, and we remarked that it didn't seem to be worded to bring in business. But the tattoo and piercing parlor is still there, so I guess that shows how much we knew about advertising! I had my ears pierced a long time ago and my mother was horrified. I wonder what today's tattoo generation will see as shocking behavior in their kids?

Petrea's comment is funny to me, because my mom had to take me in to a jewelers and "give" me pierced ears for a Christmas "present" one year when I was in college. I don't think I would have done it otherwise, and it HURT LIKE HELL! She wanted to be able to buy me earrings, and I really am glad I had them done. Now. After all the pain went away. But generally speaking, I'm not a mutilator of myself. Or anyone else, for that matter.
Novi Sad is one of my favorite cities in Serbia, probably because I'm from Vojvodina. Personally, I think it's much nicer than Belgrade.

I almost got a tatoo when I turned 30. I was actually in the parlour. I wimped out. I wanted a little red sports car to go along with my mid life crisis of the time!

How nice to take this memorial trip with your children. It's always great to come upon good memories of your loved one that makes you laugh in the midst of your grief...
Tatoo are beautiful when they're small and elegant. If I could endure the pain I would make one!!! But think that I pierce my ears when I was 32 years old...

Pain is like lots of money to some people and the more it costs or the more painful it is the better they like it. I suspect that with the signs.

Depends on the area you're getting tattooed as to whether you have a house of pain or a thimble of pain, just sayin'. I think this sign is there to attract the macho types of customer. Makes me giggle.
Truth in advertising! Great photo of these signs and the memory of a good laugh. My husband had to have his earings removed by the guy at the tatt partlor for radiation therapy, and when that was finished he had the guy re-insert them. My daughter and I went with him, taking the opportunity to get the mother/daughter nose jewels we'd talked about for ages. (Yes, Louis in Albany, we really still ARE a Berkeley family at heart ;^) )Well, after watching my new piercing, she backed out pronto. This was good in the sense that now she knows she doesn't really want to be a doctor if she's going to faint at the sight of needles in routine procedures. Also probably means I won't get a "surprise, mom, look at my tattoo" anytime soon ;^).
