Roast corn

Corn season is in full swing, and Serbs enjoy corn in many shapes and forms, from corn bread and corn mush to corn-on-the-cob. Sometimes the latter is boiled and sometimes it's roasted, as you see here in the photo. No butter used though; just salt or plain. A type of sweet corn is grown here, but it's not the same as the US kind, which has smaller, softer kernels and is a bit sweeter. This seller was actually one of five, all very close together, on Belgrade's pedestrian street, Knez Mihailova. Behind him you can see an entrance to Kalemegdan Park, and a street sign that indicates other nearby attractions.

Oh! That looks delicious! My favorite summer food, I think!

So do you think that he boils the corn first in that big pot and then finishes them off on the grill?

The signs are in English. Do they expect a lot of English speaking tourists in this area? Also, in Serbian do you say kukuruza?

Hope you are enjoying Serbia.
Dear friends of mine are Serbian refugees here in US.

Pja, yes, he does boil it in the pot (actually some people like it boiled and would just buy it that way), then finish it off on the grill.

Also, yes, there are quite a few-English-speaking (or English understanding!) tourists who come this way. Many start out in Vienna taking Danube river cruises.

oh.. interesting..
In my region (northern Italy) we don't have such corn sellers. Maybe (but this is my opinion) because we don't have "traditions" to sell corn in such way.
I just remember when I was a child and I stole corns from fields and run away when farmes discovered me and my friends... but we ate them without boiling/roasting.

Bibi,

The roasted corn in one of my favourite things about living in Belgrade/Serbia. It's really delicious!

Pja,

You'd probably be quite surprised at the number of tourists 'venturing' out to Belgrade and Serbia these days. I see more and more every day it seems.

i found you via marie's blog, and this is so interesting and informative too. i love corn done like this outdoors, we did it and saw it all over africa, as well as in israel. delicious too, evenly slightly burnt.

okay, now i see you're an aquarian like me, so we will like the same 'idiosyncratic' things. will be back, definitely.

YANKEE IN NICE

Edit: pastis is a licorice-flavored alcoholic drinksimilar to Greek ouzo. My favorite drink as it is for many people in this area. No more ...
