The fungus among-us

Mushrooms or toadstools? The term "toadstool" is nowadays usually used in storytelling when referring to poisonous or suspect mushrooms, so I guess these could be either. I photographed them in late July while visiting "Little War Island," one of the islands on the Danube here. (There's a 'Great War Island', too.) The island used to be significantly larger before WWII, and when construction of New Belgrade began in 1948, the sand from the island was transported to the mainland by large conveyor belts to cover the swamp on which the new city was to be built, and of course therefore reduced the size of the island. What's left of the island is basically a thin strip of land, less than 300 meters long and 60 meters wide. The island is an ecologically protected site, but tours are available and there is also a small beach for swimmers and sun lovers.

I had the best wild mushroom soup ever, up in the Zemplen Mountains of Hungary. A knowledgeable woman took me mushrooming, and we took our full baskets to a woman who was even more knowledgeable before we ate them. Nice photo.

Uselaine is right, don't nibble without an expert. I just heard of a child here that almost died from tasting the large white toadstools that spring up in our yards. Bibi, yours are like flowers. Love the sepia as you can well imagine.

Cool pic! I am a big mushroom fan myself but a bit wary of picking my own.

BTW, I prefer the term mushrooms. I don't think I could bring myself to eat something I called a 'toadstool'!

Just catching up after my Oz visitors. I love these toadstools and love the way your commentary goes from one thing to another and gives us so much information. Lovely photo. I'd think they are toadstools!

I love the overhead shot. It is true I seldom here the term toadstall other than fairytales. We do say though if you see a ring over toadstalls in the woods, the fairies have been.

PICKLED RED ONIONS

My grandmother used to make these around Thanksgiving and now so have I.  Great as a tart side, in salads, or in a leftover turkey sandwic...
