At the 'kafana'

A 'kafana' is a special type of restaurant that serves traditional home cooking along with wine, rakija (brandy) or beer, looks like grandma's place, and usually there's lots of smoke....this has been somewhat reduced thanks to the new no-smoking ordinance. We have here a somewhat stiff couple sitting at a window table. Judging from the cigarette between the lady's fingers, this appears to be the smoking section. They DO look a bit pale...from the smoke, the lack of sunshine in winter, or not enough wine or brandy?

I think the smoke has finally done 'em in! In which case, could I please have those groovy shoes?

I do like the window although the patrons look a bit stiff! Love the "nosnja" -- seems completely authentic. The faces are a bit too modern looking though. When we lived in Switzerland, smoking was permitted in most of the restaurants. Our friends took us to a rustic restaurant over a meat market where the local farmers liked go for special Swiss grilled meat treat...we had to wash every bit of clothing and ourselves due to a mixture of cooking smoke and cigarette smoke. The food was very good.

This sounds like my type of place - sans the smoke.
I'm so spoiled not having to deal with smokers now, I'm not sure I could even tolerate a smokers 'section"!

Interesting information and very interesting photograph. Yes, they are rather stiff, but I think you caught the lady in the act of rubbing her foot against the gentleman's leg. He's quite surprised, as you can see!

My 26-year-old son is planning a trip to Serbia in the spring to visit relatives he's never met. As a Californian, he's a non-smoker and has grown up in a nearly smoke free state. I'm wondering how it will be for him in Serbia. During past visits to Europe, he managed but I'm thinking Serbia may be the smokingiest place he's visited!
