These are pumpkins, though not the jack o-lantern type. Inside their flesh is bright orange and about three inches thick. Too hard to carve for Halloween, but they make excellent pumpkin pies. I have made mine from pumpkins like this for years, ever since I came here.

I remember years ago when traveling I was in the Atlanta area and saw yellow watermelons. That was a surprise, but they tasted just like the usual watermelons.

We carved them for Halloween -- it's A LOT of work, but can be done. The seeds were really yummy roasted, but a lot of them were sprouting already, something I've never seen in a pumpkin in the States.
