The Charles Gate

The Charles Gate stands in what is called Lower Kalemegdan, part of Kalemegdan  park that lies below the fortress and The Victor statue.

The Austrians built the Gate of Czar Karl VI (1736) in commemoration of their victories. This is undoubtedly the most important Baroque monument preserved to the south of the rivers Sava and Danube.

I like all that stone. For something built 200 years before I came along it's in pretty good shape.

I'm not sure of baroque. I know that I'm also baroque until my next check arrives!

ancient walls fascinate me, i wish they could tell us what they've seen ... my imagination is quite good but i know these walls could tell it better

And not in bad shape for something that's almost 300 years old. Built in the days before planned obsolescence, apparently.

THE MARKET AFTER HOURS
