MAN WITH A RED BAG
Taking the bus home. No shots from town; in a lull. But here, through the bus window, is a spot of brightness--the man's red bag.

JUDENLAGER ZEMUN/BELGRADE CONCENTRATION CAMP
Yesterday a visiting friend and I took a private tour of the nearly forgotten JUDENLAGER ZEMUN, the former 1937 Belgrade Fairgrounds. The name Zemun and not Belgrade appears on its original name because at that time, the nearby municipality of Zemun was once part of the Hapsburg Empire and subsequently Croatia, and included Zemun. Over 40,000 persons (Jews, Serbs, Roma) were tortured and executed over the area of these fairgrounds and others were shipped to three other locations within Belgrade alone. Many who were allegedly told they were being transported there died on the way in an especially-designed GAS VAN that sufficated the passengers en route.
We were led around the now museum, located in the above photos, by a young man, a documentarian, from the Memorial Center.
A most informative but disturbing visit that will haunt me.

DID SHE SEE ME; DID SHE CARE?
I always play innocent when I used my camera for such shots, pretending I'm checking something on the camera, and not looking directly at my subject at all. This woman didn't react, but it really does look as if she saw me.

SHUTTERS
Went through the old municipality of Zemun, which was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Lots of beautiful architecture.

VIKING MAIDEN
Well, no, not really, but this woman waiting for cell phone help reminded me of warriors of the North.

VISITING THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH
My Indian friend on the left adores visiting Orthodox churches here in Serbia. This one is the CATHEDRAL OF ST. ARCHANGEL MIHAILO. Coincidentall the lady draped in a pink shawl was not Indian, but just covering her head.

REAL GOOD FOR FREE
Came across this young musician in Zemun, a nearby municipality. He did play very well, and this brought back Joni Mitchell's 1970-something hit REAL GOOD FOR FREE. Love her, love the song

IMPROVEMENT
I have shown you this controversial new clock before. Controversial because it was placed in a newly-created roundabout that really didn't need to be and also because it had no hands to show the time. Now ine side does... We're getting there.

BACK TO SCHOOL
Our local basketball court, soccer field, and kids' play area had all stood nearly empty over the summer. Families on vacation, kids at grandma's, summer camp, and now they're back. School started here September 1st.

THEME DAY "TRAVEL"
"Travel" is September's Theme day. This is not a Serbian bus, but one I photographed last June on my way to SeaTac airport to return to Belgrade. I guess if one has a choice, it would be wise to travel with "Blessed," hoping that this big bus was indeed blessed and that you'll reach your destination safely.
See other interpretations of "Travel" on THEME DAY.

THEME DAY: SOFT
These traditional Serbian plum dumplings are indeed soft and flavorful. Grandma made them from scratch, but I fell for the frozen ones that ...
