Nostalgia.... The Patty Melt


I hadn't had a Patty Melt since high school, but indulged the other day at Johnny Rocket's here in Seattle.  I seem to remember that the bread was rye once-upon-a-time and this bread was just whole wheat, but it was good all the same.

I had to look it up- I'd never heard of patty melts. Apparently the traditional version could also be served on sourdough bread, which I like; I'm not personally fond of rye bread.

  My grandmother used to make these around Thanksgiving and now so have I.  Great as a tart side, in salads, or in a leftover turkey sandwic...
