Sure looks like an old well weathered lion.
He's majestic and looks strong enough to take on all comers. The bridge in St. Augustine, Florida had two very beautiful lions guarding it. Then "they" got the bright idea of building a new bridge. I think the lions are gone.
And I was thinking pretty much the same as Genie. You almost get the feeling that the lion is musing on old and new—and a bit angry about the carved initials!

Very nice. It has a fantasy or science fiction feel to it. Time to clean the light sensor, though! (The bane of my photographic existence.)

Bob, the HDR also brought out my little dirty spot, which I tried to fix but did so, badly! Yeah, got to get it cleaned...!

That lion must have seen a lot... I suspect at least two wars and the time when across the river there was nothing, but sand and wetlands... Great shot!
