THEME DAY--shelter--The Smederevo Fortress
Was hard-pressed to find a shelter shot, since I've had little free time to roam the streets. This was taken a while back in Smederevo, about 45 kilometers southeast of Belgrade. The fortress was build in the early 1400s and withstood several attacks by the Ottomans before being seriously damaged in WWII. As you can see, it's been restored.
Sheltered a lot of people! If you want to read more, see here.

PICKLED RED ONIONS
My grandmother used to make these around Thanksgiving and now so have I. Great as a tart side, in salads, or in a leftover turkey sandwic...

That's the sort of place I'd enjoy visiting.
Great theme day post.
This shows how in olden days the people took the idea of shelter very seriously.
That is a safe and strong shelter!
From the era when the next village was your competitor, and therefore your enemy. Keep them at bay with all means available.
La vue colle magnifiquement au mot "forteresse".
I think this may be the strongest shelter today Bibi, brilliant find for the theme.
I think at one time, moats were very useful and offered a lot of protection. Not so much theses days. Clever theme day post!
That is a great take on the theme!
A fortress is probably the safest of all shelters!
