Impressions of Belgrade and Serbia and maybe photos from an in-country trip by a long-term ex-pat.

MACHO MAN
We had one decent sunny day recently, just enough apparently for this guy to sport shots and show off his muscles. He had great tattoos on his left arm that I saw when I passed him; no photo.

TRIBUTE TO RUSKIN BOND
One such, written in 1980 and made into a film in 2005, is THE BLUE UMBRELLA and so of course I could not help but think of him when I saw this big one in Kalemegdan Park overlooking New Belgrade.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS--a bag my size
Finally found a bag that will fit all my stuff inside, including my camera when it rains...and my reflection and my dog's.

COFFEE TIME
Given that the Turks were in many parts of the former Yugoslavia for nearly 500 years, it's logical that some of their customs remained. Such is the case with 'Turkish' coffee. The cups are not typical, but the little pot with a long handle, a dĹžezva (pronounced JEZZ-vah) is. Here in Serbia though I have never seen one with a top, but imagine that it was added to keep the coffee hot. On second thought, it might belong to the teapot on the left, but couldn't fit on the shelf.

BLACK AND WHITE SPARKLY
On one of our gloomier days recently, I spotted this balloon seller who seemed to emit his own light.

SHADOWS HAVING FUN
I guess this might be more silhouette than shadow, but I am sure there are some shadows there...on the ceiling?

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS--RAIN'S GOOD FOR REFLECTIONS
I'm very tired of our rain, but it's good for reflections...and other things.

SKYWATCH--tilt!
Of course the buildings aren't tilting; just the perspective twist.
I wish our skies would like this again and that the cold wind and rain would disappear until fall!

UNDIES
First of all, this is from my archives. The weather has been so gloomy, windy, cold, and rainy that there's no way this woman in a nearby village could dry her laundry or sit sleeveless outside.
I'm still waiting for the sun.

OUT FOR A STROLL
These girls brightened a gloomy day with their colors. It has been raining quite a lot, but as I type, I dare say I see some sun.

NOT SNOW, BUT MIGHT AS WELL BE
It's still darn cold and rainy here. However, that is not snow, but rather 'blossoms' from a tree that blow like snowflakes in the spring.

MONDAY MURAL---the zebra
-I saw this zebra through a cafe 'window,' or rather the cafe's partially damaged facade, but could not go in. It may not actually be a mural, but a collaged image.
In any case, it is on a wall, so it's a mural, haha.
Check out other murals at MONDAY MURALS.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS: ME IN A POT
There I am in the reflection in the now retired kettle at my favorite cafe.

TWO PIGEONS SPOUTING
These are two of four pigeons that stand below the fountain called "Awakening" in Kalemegdan Park. I've shown you THE ENTIRE FOUNTAIN before. Apparently, these birdies have been spouting water since 1928.

IS ANYONE AWARE ANYMORE?
I don't know about you, but it's rare that I see someone out for a walk, which I assume this fellow was, and who checks his phone at length i.e. for several minutes and who is oblivious to everything around him. Mind you, he might have been checking the weather forecast, for it started to pour...and pour....and pour, and then a full-blown monsoon with wind and then hail (okay, no hail in monsoons, but it really pelted me before I could find a place to duck into.

AND THESE ARE CALLED...?
These statues, leaning against the facade of a building downtown, and whose heads seem to bear the weight of a ledge above, have no name that I could find. They're not caryatids, which are free-standing supports, nor statues in niches, nor are they statues in a tympanum.
In any case, in view of the horrendous May 3rd school shooting in Belgrade (the likes of which had NEVER been seen before), and another punk-criminal shooting in a nearby town the following day, these statues seem to be bearing the country's grief. If you need to know more, especially about the former, see THIS LINK.

TWO-BEER BURGER
While I was waiting for my grilled chicken at a nearby 'fast food' place, I caught this fellow (but unfortunately not his mega-burger) and his liquid refreshment.

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY--the sheet
It had been very windy recently, so the flapping of this sheet across the street from where I was walking alerted me. Nice blue! I miss drying clothes on an outdoor clothesline, complete with clothes prop, like my grandmother did.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS--CAT IN BED
This cat belongs to an antique store I often walk by. The bed has been there for ages, so I guess it's not for sale, but the cat's.

STRIKING A POSE
This girl is standing just below the STATUE OF PRINCE MIHAILO, which in turn stands in front of the National Museum. The building you see in the background here is Belgrade's National Theater.

MAN, REVISITED
On April 25th, I posted a photo of this SAME MAN and wrote that I'd really like to get a better look at his cane. Yes, I could have asked, and this time he wasn't counting his money, but using his phone. If you zoom in, you can see it better now.

MONDAY MURALS
Goodness.....I took this photo thinking it was a hummingbird, but now I see it isn't. Then I thought it was a Kingfisher, but I don't think it's that either....anyone know?
