Impressions of Belgrade and Serbia and maybe photos from an in-country trip by a long-term ex-pat.

Keychains!
I've posted this photo sideways so you won't get a crooked neck or have to tilt your computer screen! These are keychains with some Serbian guy/girl first names or nicknames. Some aren't so popular, like Glorija, but others like Katarina and Dejan are. Girls' names are often for (sweet!) fruits, like "Jagoda," (YAH-go-da) which means "strawberry." "Joca" ( YOHT-sa) is short for "Jovan," "Gaga" is short for "Dragana," and "Goca" (GOHT-sa) is short for Gordana," also pictured here. I could buy the "David" one for my cousin and the "Dejan" one for my son. My daughter and I, who have Latin-based names, can never find ours here.

PICKLED RED ONIONS
My grandmother used to make these around Thanksgiving and now so have I. Great as a tart side, in salads, or in a leftover turkey sandwic...

As usual, your photo was very well done, and your post interesting to read! I have really loved looking at Belgrade through your lens!
What a fun and colorful photo! Maybe you and your daughter should adopt pseudonyms so you can get keychains too.
Cool shot, I think I saw these keychains somewhere in souvenir shop along interstate or national park in US.
So the shops in Belgrade want to capture some tourist dollars too, eh? Clever of you to rotate the image on our behalf -:)
Reminds me of the similar keychains you see in tourist shops in Devon (and Cornwall and any beach town in the UK really!). Glad to see that it's the same abroad - but with the big difference in names! It's interesting to see what they mean, and how they get shortened - thanks for the insight into this little bit of Serbian culture!
(and I mentioned Citydailyphoto and a few specific Blogs - you, Cleveland and NYC - in the intro to my 12 of 12 photo post yesterday, just in case you notice some new visitors! It's part of a photo challenge set up by Chad Darnell, where you take 12 photos on the 12th day of each month. There's a link to his Blog and then another to the specific entry for this month's 12 of 12, which lists everyone who's taken part)
Interesting post. Keychains are still popular here but they make a big mess in your pants pocket so mine still has the flopping, vinyl, thingy that had the Toyota dealership name on it from when we bought the car new.
I still look at keychains to see what different ones there are. My sister collects, "Lost in Space" memorbilia and has one of that.
I am so very glad that I found your blog. Wonderful.
You have a great eye for color and shape. This is a wonderful pic today. Glad to see the vote leading toward inclusion in the EU. In my opinion, participation is a mixed but mostly to the benefit of the countries in the EU.
hmmmmm...."Louis" doesn't find "Vache" among the selections....
