WEEKEND REFLECTIONS--Briefly back to Serbia Part II

The other day I posted a photo from Kovilj Monastery in Serbia because I had received a essage from a Serbian composer in the US who is interested in bringing several of the monastery's monks to NYC and Chicago this March to perform, singing medieval chants.

If you want to know more, here is the link.

Pictured at votive candles in the monastery's gift shop.

SKYWATCH--Mount Rainier

Another drive-by shooting over the 520 floating bridge.  I was a passenger, don't worry, otherwise I'd have been in the water.

Briefly back to Serbia....

No, didn't fly back to Serbia, but as you all know, we are all connected in cyberspace.  The other day I received an email from a Serbian composer in NYC, who is trying to bring several monks from the Kovilj Monastery in Serbia to the US to sing their chants in Carnegie Hall.

If you click right here, you can read all about this project and, she hopes, donate something toward their journey.

Please have a look.

ABC WEDNESDAY--"C" is for "child at heart"

I get a big kick out of toy stores.  I go in all the time, and today I was actually accompanied by a child, my grandson, who loves wind-up toys.

I bought him these four here and bought myself the sand mold in the shape of the Taj Mahal...you know I love India.  I don't plan on making sand Taj Mahals, but I think it would do Jello nicely and maybe some puddings.....

Mystery Man

Another drive-by shooting of mine here in Seattle. Not sure what this fellow is made out of or what he's for (perhaps for flowers/vines?)  but he caught my attention,

Nostalgia.... The Patty Melt

I hadn't had a Patty Melt since high school, but indulged the other day at Johnny Rocket's here in Seattle.  I seem to remember that the bread was rye once-upon-a-time and this bread was just whole wheat, but it was good all the same.

SKYWATCH--first view

My first view of Seattle this visit, as seen from the I-5.

Not quite right....?

Hmmm....  "If we don't have it, just ask!"  But if they don't have it, why bother to ask?  I think this sign would have been better if they'd written "If you don't see it, just ask!"  or else add "and we'll see if we can get it."

Picky, picky me.

ABC WEDNESDAY--"B" is for "Beautiful"

These beautiful orchids on my daughter's kitchen windowsill bring a taste of spring to a dreary winter day.

It's winter--eat some cheese.

Am in Seattle visiting my daughter, who's expecting Baby #2.  A trip to Whole Foods yielded this shot.  I love cheese, all  kinds, and will definitely be indulging.

I am not a football fan, but speaking of cheese, the Seattle Seahawks defeated Wisconsin's Green Bay Packers today, whose fans are known as Cheeseheads.  On to the Super Bowl!

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY--no sittin' around for me

No sitting around for me. Some of you know that I have been in Seattle now for four days, visiting my daughter and family who are preparing for the arrival of Baby #2 (a girl) at the end of February.  I hope she will be an Aquarius like her grandmother, but she'll need to make the scene by the 18th.

After Seattle, if all goes well, I'll be going to India for a month and a half, then back to Seattle to await the arrival  of my son and family for a big family get-together.

Don't think I'll be using this bench in Kalemegdan Park a lot...

February 1, they will address this intriguing question:  If you had to leave forever the city
from which you usually post, what would you miss most?

SKYWATCH---Overcast.....

Same old bridges as many times before, with the concentration camp tower in the foreground.  Gray day...need I say?

Through a dirty window

Nothing like a bright, sunny day to make windows look just awful if they're not sparkling clean....

Prosveta (Education) is one of Belgrade's oldest publishing houses.

If you're wondering about the paintings, they have an art gallery upstairs from where I took this photo many moons ago.

ABC WEDNESDAY '"A" is for "A"....or "Accidental A"

Yay!  Been waiting a long time to post this one I took last summer in the park.

An Accidental A.

Strong wind.

Well, of course the wind didn't bend these posts, but I got you eye, didn't I?

More like a heavy vehicle took the turn too short.

Nippy morning.

I've never been as sick as I have this past fall/winter. One cold after another, cough, sore throat, earache; you name it:  I've had it.  Now I have a touch of laryngitis.

Have to walk the dog though, so I bundle up and go, distance depending on my degree of illness.

BLACK AND WHITE...mostly

I am having déjà vu with this one....I hope I  haven't posted it before.  From my archives.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS--disappearing

Balkanska Street downtown used to be known for its many artisan shops like this leather shop. There were milliners, sewing shops, all kinds of places where you could find just what you want.  These shops have for the most part disappeared.

These dog collars are not state-of-the-art, but do the job.

SKYWATCH: Cold on Kalemegdan

It was  bitter cold when I took this photo.  I somehow feel the need for long walks when it's really cold. Bibi does not share my opinion, and would be quite happy walking around the block.

ABC WEDNESDAY "Z" is for "zoomer"

A new word for me, and possibly for you. I'm always at a loss for Z words.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines 'zoomer' as:  a baby boomer (born between 1946-1964) who is energetic and adventurous in retirement, who rejects traditional, passive stereotypes associated with aging and retirement. —David J. Demko, PhD, www.demko.com/zoomers.htm, 1998

So I am one.  Are you?  That's me in the brown trousers and black top on the step on the left during my last trip to India in 2013.  Getting itchy to go again.

Granny Smith

These are Granny Smith apples and they are a lovely shade of green.  But you've seen green ones, so I did them in sepia.  The apples are now history and they were good....

Colors in motion

This lady was carefully picking her way down an icy street. Looks like I was a bit concerned about my own movements when I sneaked this shot, since she's a bit blurred....

Wet, cold, and icky

Snow here, but not much. Melting, and nowhere near as pretty as this photo might be.

Hey--no Coke?

This sign, which had the same text written in Serbian on the other side, stands in front of a bookstore downtown.  Looks like the Coca Cola people furnished the board, but seems as if there's no option for Coke here.

1944's Coke slogan was simply, "How about a Coke?", so maybe that's reason enough.

Have a look at Coke's slogans throughout the years.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2015

"Where did the year go?" some ask, and indeed, they fly by fast....

This photo is an 'old' one of mine, and except possibly for the more modern buildings on the horizon, could be one from long ago.

Happy New Year to you all.

STILL RACING AND WINNING

I bought the Rubik's Race game several years ago for my granddaughter when she was around nine. Now she is still playing and honestly, u...
