The Madonna Inn

Depending on your tastes, the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, California, is either the height of gaudiness or a really classy place. This is a photo of the main dining room, in "Pepto Bismol pink," as my friend put it.

The Inn is a California landmark. Its first 12 rooms were completed December 24, 1958, and an additional 28 rooms were quickly built. One hundred ten unique rooms now exist, each decorated differently to suit many individual tastes, like the Barrel of Fun, Antique Cars, Buffalo, Caveman, and Matterhorn rooms, some with waterfall showers, rock fireplaces, European fixtures, and fine furnishings to name a few.

Gaudy or classy, I think I may stay there on my next trip....

I'm in the gaudy camp, but I'd just have to stay there for the hell of it. I am expecting Santa to pop out at any minute.

It looks so familiar. I wonder how many movies used this setting? I kind of like it, gaudy though it may be!

Classy? Gaudy? Whatever! It's definitely fun. Lucky you for getting to visit—and thanks for taking us along.

This particular dining room isn't to my taste, but it sure is lush! And the rooms sound wonderfully quirky and lots of fun! Definitely worth a visit no matter what one thinks :)

Pepto Bismol has always been a big joke in our family and this picture is a perfect portrait for it! lol

I went to see the translation for "gaudy" in French... Wouldn't we say "kitsch" too?

The other rooms are not bad, but this diningroom is way too much for my taste!

I visited this place a few years ago. Over-the-top Gaudy for sure. Fun place to visit, though. Might even be fun to stay there one night. Longer would definitely be an assault on my senses.

I'm not sure what to say! Certainly an acquired taste!

I lived near there for a brief span of time and thought it was the perfect place to take visitors. It's quite unusual -

I love the Madonna Inn! It was THE place to take out of town guests in the 60's, for sure. Not exactly classy or un-classy, but in a class by itself. Great memories.....

My friends spent their honeymoon there. They said after you got used to the big buffalo head on the wall above the circular shaped bed with red satin linens, it was pretty okay. :-)
