Impressions of Belgrade and Serbia and maybe photos from an in-country trip by a long-term ex-pat.

Went to a wedding....
Went to a wedding the other weekend and stepped out for a breath of fresh air....and a glass of wine with a friend.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS--caught in granite
Yesterday I showed you St. Marko's Church with a monument in the park beside it. Here's a shot from behind that monument, which is dedicated to children killed in the NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999.

SKYWATCH--St. Marko in the mist
Sveti Marko's cathedral looks in the mist at Tasmajdan Park. The egg-shaped monument is to the children who died in the NATO bombing of 1999.

ABC WEDNESDAY "K" is for "king-size"
I like ice cream, but doubt if I could tackle something like this....
These are two king-size "cones" on display at an ice cream seller's (What else?) downtown.

Recycling goes on
I've posted about recycling here several times before, and though there is a movement for official recycling, most is done by individuals like this man, spotted on Knez Mihailova Street.

A piece of sunshine
A piece of sunshine from times past. An old, East-German manufactured Trabant sits alone under a tree.
Looks like it's well-loved, though!

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS--anything....?
In the late Seventies, fifteen year-old actress-then-model, Brooke Shields, purred in an ad for Calvin Klein jeans, "You know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing. Absolutely nothing," which made some believe she wore no underwear under her jeans.
I'm not sure if Brooke did, but I don't think this girl does!

SKYWATCH--gray sky, black bird
It's a black bird, not a blackbird, at least black in its silhouette. I think it's a pigeon, perched under an arch in Kalemegdan Park. Just below it stands this fellow, so I imagine the bird's keeping its distance! See other skies on SKYWATCH.

Homeless
When I walk early in Tasmajdan Park, I often see this woman on the same park bench. Of course she's not there in inclement weather, but when it's warmish, she is, and I go early enough to see her awaken, make her 'bed', and then do her hair. And then she speaks, sometimes softly, sometimes in a harsh voice, to her suitcase.
Of course I don't stick around to eavesdrop, but this is so sad. I wonder what her story is.

ABC WEDNESDAY--"J" is for "Just by chance"
Or maybe "Just for fun," since I can't help but not believe these two ladies set out with matching heads and weren't aware of it. One has a definite preference for red, the other for blue.
See other Js on Mrs. Nesbitt's ABC WEDNESDAY.
NOTE: When I clicked on ABC WEDNESDAY to link up, I learned that Mrs. Nesbitt's husband is ill and that she will be temporarily putting aside ABC Wednesday. Prayers to her and her family.

Symbols behind a symbol
The statue of the Victor in Kalemegdan Park is a symbol of Belgrade, and the humble sparrow has become the city's mascot, as I explained to you in this post last April.

Catch a falling star....
"Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket...." goes the song. And that's exactly what I did when I found this piece of decoration on a park bench. I'm a lost cause when it comes to picking up junk I can use...or not.

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY---waiting
Benches in the shadows, and some in the sun, await passers-by in Kalemegdan Park.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS-- for Turkish coffee....
Individually, these little pots are called 'džezva' and are used for making Turkish coffee. Many are on sale in Kalemegdan Park and around Belgrade. In some restaurants, Turkish coffee is served on a little tray with a small cup and an individual džezva , accompanied by a Turkish Delight.
Remember, the Turks occupied Yugoslavia/Serbia for 500 years. Long enough to drink lots of coffee.

SKYWATCH--three planes and a sunset
Thanks again to my friend Jasmina for this shot off of her rooftop terrace. I actually had my back to this view, and she noticed the planes' trails. From this terrace is where I took last Friday's shot.

No white after Labor Day
"No white after Labor Day," my mother used to say when I was growing up in the US. I think she meant shoes, of course, but white pants might have fallen into that category, too. No matter, since here in Belgrade Labor Day is May 30th, not September 1st.
Anyway, the two girls in the foreground have definitely abandoned summer wear.... I see fur, leopard skin, and snakeskin....all fake, for sure, but environmentalists shouldn't have an issue with that.

ABC WEDNESDAY "I" is for "intruder"
It looked like rain the other day, so I headed out with my little Nikon P510 and decided to practice some macros shots. (No rain came.) I was so intent on shooting these blooms that it was only when I returned home that I found the intruder, immortalized. (I'm very pleased with this camera's capabilities, though it isn't fast enough for 'gotta get it right now' shots.)

Another use for old tires
Here you go. Instead of making a swing of painting them white and planting flowers inside, you can use them to keep 'a lid' on your haystack!
All you need is a tire and of course, a haystack....

Alive and well.....
Took a day trip to the town of Kucevo, about a 2-hour drive to the southeast. Not much in Kucevo, but the surrounding area houses (is that the word....?) a number of caves, one of which I showed you last Saturday.
This fellow's shirt reads Union of Communists. This was a hip shot, but even if he saw me, he didn't seem to care.
For those language lovers, the ".....sticarnica" on the awning would read "poslatnicarnica" (pastry shop) if I hadn't cropped the photo!

ABC WEDNESDAY=="H" is for "helpful"
There are many tourists in Belgrade. Young people with backpacks and also large groups of tourists who do the 'Danube Tours', coming from farther up the river. Those who can easily keep up with the tour guide do just that, but some others, like this man in the wheelchair, prefer to sightsee at their own pace.
This man had been studying his map intently and I was about to go over to him, but the man in the striped shirt beat me to it.
See other Hs on Mrs. Nesbitt's ABC WEDNESDAY.

Hello!
You just never know what you'll come across in Kalemegdan Park. Last Friday I posted this big guy, who was contemplating munching on a gardener. Now, the man in blue has come face-to-face with a dinosaur who would have made short work of him, once upon a time....assuming that humans and dinosaurs existed at the same time, which they didn't, unless you buy into this theory.

THEME DAY-Rust and Ruins-Cinema Balkan
The movie theater "Balkan", built between 1867 and 1870, was first used as a hotel for a short while and even an opera house, and later hosted projections of the first movies between 1909 and 1911. In 1912 it became a permanent movie theater. I remember going there on a fairly regular basis, and I took my kids to see Disney's Fantasia there as well, a film that I had enjoyed as a child.
Though there has been much talk of its restoration, it's been as shown above for many years now....sad. The way things are going now, it's likely to eventually be turned into a shoe store or clothing store.....
Check out other interpretations of this theme day at THEME DAY.
