Tic-tac-toe Café

Except for the extra person on the upper left, these people seated at an outdoor café reminded me of a game of tic-tac-toe. While I was seated upstairs and indoors, no one came to occupy the empty space on the lower right.

CUPCAKES!!!

Yes, these are cupcakes, or rather 'cup cakes,' since the World Cup started this past weekend in South Africa. This post goes out for all cake lovers and especially for Marie-Noyale of Larchmont Daily Photo, who posted mouthwatering cupcakes last Saturday.

ABC Wednesday "L" is for "Lany Poniedzialek"

I am here in Poland for a few more days. Yesterday my friend and I went out to an outdoor regional museum where there are several village houses that display various aspects of Polish rural life. Some interiors were of a village old school house; others were of farmers or craftsmen. Still others showed kitchen scenes where it appeared as if everyone had just hastily departed, leaving set tables, freshly-baked bread, and sliced meats. Artisans, dressed in folk outfits, displayed and sold their wares, like papercuts, paper flower bouquets, and wood carvings. There were also games for children all along the road, such as egg-rolling, hoop, and this custom of water spraying. Dousing passers-by is what really takes place on Easter Monday, or as it is called here "Lany Poniedzialek." Using targets keeps innocent bystanders dry and still lets kids have fun.

Acrobatics on the beach

The beach in Chennai, as on other beaches I've seen here, is a place for all kinds of activities from selling candies, offering horseback rides, selling trinkets and food, and of course for performers like this little girl.

The Bay of Bengal for the most part is really choppy, so few people go swimming where the water is so rough, so activities are welcome diversions.

Radovan cools off

"Karpuzy" is what watermelon are called in Greek, and we enjoyed many of them. Prices fell later on from the nearly 1/2 euro a kilo we paid at the beginning of our stay. Here in Serbia, watermelon are "lubenice," (LOOO-beh-neet-say) and Radovan grows them at home.Here Radovan is watching "Bibi"s son play a tennis match in all that heat....and thinking about the watermelon that he'll enjoy later on.
In the meantime, after the match he enjoyed the tiny ice cream cone that came with our coffee frappés!

Checkmate!

Probably after having read their selection of newspapers similar to those I posted yesterday, these taxi drivers are enjoying a game of chess! I see them quite often in the same location, so they must be serious rivals. When a customer comes, they take their board into a nearby cafe for safe-keeping. Notice that one of them drives a Mercedes taxi, not uncommon here, no kidding, since originally one could important an expensive car much more cheaply if it was intended for "official" business.
