ABC WEDNESDAY - 'T' is for 'ten gallon' hat

I think this might be some version of the ten-gallon hat (which only held three liters, I think...).  Spotted this fellow at a local Starbucks while here in Seattle.

Sweet and tart

It's been warm and so I treated myself to a lemonade, instead of my usual cappuccino. Look at all that sugar! I actually don't put sugar in my lemonade at all, so back it went when the waiter cleared the table.

Bought the snowdrops from the man I posted a few days ago.

Tic-tac-toe Café

Except for the extra person on the upper left, these people seated at an outdoor café reminded me of a game of tic-tac-toe. While I was seated upstairs and indoors, no one came to occupy the empty space on the lower right.

Rip 'em up!

If you are a new father celebrating your baby's birth in Serbia, please don't wear your best designer shirt to the party.... This is what it will look like, since it's customary for male guests to shred a new Dad's shirt. My son wisely wore an old t-shirt and brought along two other old shirts....to be ripped by friends who arrived a bit later.

The Happy Housewives

Definitely not Desperate Housewives, these ladies. This wall art beckoned me down a passageway where I expected to find pots of simmering, home-cooked dishes. Instead the menu bore only names of cocktails, wines, and beer. I can see why these 'Vesele Domacice' (VEh-seh-leh do MAH cheet-seh) are happy: lots of drinks and no cooking to do! Was this fellow just clowning around or did he make the plunge? Neither, actually, since you've probably now noticed he's a dummy, in the original sense. Like his suit?

ABC WEDNESDAY 'O' is for 'Open'

Open is what this window is, and while I was driving (I stopped briefly, much to the consternation of the hurried driver behind me, but hey, it's for my blog) and snapped this photo of a disembodied arm with its dimpled elbow.

Composition in Blue

This one is for Virginia at Birmingham Alabama Daily Photo, who I believe inadvertently started a 'table and chairs' meme (I guess that's what it is; Google says a meme is "An idea that, like a gene, can replicate and evolve.) In any case, this is another contribution from me. I liked the colors and the geometric patterns.

Table and Chairs

This is a very typical scene around markets here in Belgrade and all over Serbia. The sign on the wall reads "Ljuba's Hot Burek". You'll remember I posted about burek here, so have a look to see what it is. Burek is usually accompanied by (drinkable) yogurt, but you can always get yourself a Coke from the machine you see...

Almost symmetrical

The ground floor of this building is a "bistro-baked goods" shop in Pančevo, a half-hour drive from Belgrade. I was struck by the building's symmetry (or almost!) and that it looks a bit like a movie set. Looks like "things go better with Coke" here, too.

Theme Day---Lines

Here's a cafe/restaurant on the Sava with lots of lines. Even the fisherman has his own line...but no fish yet.

Theme Day--Sister Cities "Belgrade-Chicago"

"Chicago, Chicago, that's my kind of town...." And I'm pretty sure it would be too, if I were ever to travel there. Thanks to Nesha of the Beograd Cafe and Meat Market in Chicago, I am showing you this photo today that he gave me permission to publish. As their site http://www.beogradmarket.net/explains, "Beograd Market is a family-owned, old-fashioned market and coffee shop...selling only the finest tasting beef, pork, and lamb....In addition to our meat products, we also carry homemade meals, groceries, and frozen foods." At the Market Blue

Nothing like a cold beer with a friend, and if it's too hot to run down to your local cafe or pub, just pull up a crate at the Market Blue.

Waiting for the games to begin

This tiny sparrow has shown up early for the "Universiade," an international sport competition organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) under the sponsorship of the International Olympic Committee. This competition brings together student sportsmen and sportswomen. In 2009, this international sports festival will be held in Belgrade from July 1st to the 12th. Since the sparrow is already the symbol of Belgrade, our little friend will be the Universiade's mascot! Why such a little bird? Simply because the sparrow is capable of flying higher and further than much bigger birds, and like the sparrow, little Serbia hopes to fly higher and farther than its competitors!
