SKYWATCH--Institute for Neonatology exhibit

Belgrade's Institute for Neonatology currently has a photo exhibit in Tasmajdan Park, dedicated to all the prematurely-born babies who, thanks to the Institute's care, made the transition from fragile newborns to healthy children. On each board, as you can see, are one or two photographs, with information about the child and his or her (or their, in the case of these twins) family. Sunny skies in store for them and pretty soon they'll be strolling through parks like the children you see on the sidewalk.

ABC WEDNESDAY "C" is for "cartoon"

A long line of big political cartoons! This post goes out to Daryl of Out and About in New York City and her husband, Toonman. I hope both she and he will enjoy this post. Marko Somborac has a daily comic strip in a popular newspaper here. I am not into politics at all, but even I 'get' what he writes. I took my good old time browsing and laughing at all these cartoons... What fun.

Note: These changing panel exhibits in Kalemegdan are extremely well-visited.... I took this photo in the very early a.m., walking Bibi! I revisited the same evening, but couldn't have gotten this shot because of the crowd.

ABC Wednesday-- 'I' is for 'Internationally intermingled'

Nope, no blankets for sale! Is that what you thought? So did I at first, when I saw this sign on on a wall of Hotel Jugoslavija that you can read somewhat outdated information about right here. I'd just walked passed another sign on a floating restaurant that read 'Fine Dinning,' so I figured the same poor speller made this sign for 'blankets' and forgot the 'l'.

Not so. 'Premier Halls,' a Belgrade firm using an English name, is advertising 'banket sale' (in Serbian) or 'banquet rooms.' A little confusing at first....

Ooops.

Well, like this earlier posting of mine, here's another example of a wrong name selection, especially for marketing in English-speaking countries! Yuhor is the name of a meat processing plant that is over 100 years old. "YU" stands for "Yugoslavia," which no longer exists, but I could not figure out what the last three letters signify.

Anyone know?

Skywatch Friday--Lookout below!

This is one of Belgrade's oldest department stores, but newly renovated. "Beogradjanka," as it is known, fell into disrepair during the latter socialist era when privatization came about. Now it's quite posh inside, and has had a facelift, too, including new panes of glass outside. About two weeks ago, one fell while it was being installed on the street that is on the left of this photo, but fortunately, no one was hurt.

"One bite and you're there!"

Well, who would ever think you could find such pastoral beauty in the very center of Belgrade? Well, you can! Or sort of... This lady at a bus stop was seated in front of a Milka chocolate ad, which reads (on the photo below) "One little bite and you're there!" For those of you not familiar with Milka chocolate, it is positively addictive....smooth, creamy, and not too sweet. My favorite is the one without anything in it, no nuts, no raisins.... I took this shot from my car. Can you find me in the photo below? (and yes, I erased part of the text in t he top photo to fool you...!)

ABC Wednesday "E" is for "expectations"

These workmen are looking at a billboard of the complex that will occupy the plot in front of them where one building is already going up. After many years of stagnancy, new buildings are mushrooming all over Belgrade. Some are locally financed, while others like the one you see her, are from foreign investments.

The Evil Chipsy Eaters

Okay, well, maybe they're not all evil, but the girl on the right definitely has a malicious look as she bites into her chip. The one in the middle looks seductive, and the one on the left just looks happy, as most of us are, to be nibbling a potato chip. "Chipsy" chips are really good, too. I took this photo out of my car window while waiting for the light to change.

Bugs in Belgrade!

Every year Holiday on Ice comes to Belgrade and is a big success. Every year of course it's on a different theme, and this year it's our friends from Warner Brothers, Bugs and the gang. Here Bugs Bunny is known as "“Duško Dugouško,” the latter word meaning "long-eared." “Duško" is the shortened form of a man's name. Whatever his name is, he's an awful lot of fun, and I am considering buying a couple of tickets. The least expensive mentioned on the billboard ones are 999 dinars, or about 11 euros or $14.00. Just under the word "Bugs" are a number of our City Daily Photo landmarks! Free advertising!

Hurry, hurry! Get married now!

If you're single and live in Jagodina (YAH-go-dee-na), you might want to take advantage of the City's offer. If you get married by the end of 2008, you'll be offered a job, 200 euros for your first child (not necessarily before the end of 2008...), and up to 200 euros monthly for every fourth child until he/she is 18. Any takers?

P.S. The text written on the column supporting the billboard reads, "Please do not put posters on this billboard." Considering the billboard is at least 3 meters (9 or so feet) tall, that won't be easy.)

Ouch!!!

It started out as a gray day here today, so to brighten things up, I couldn't help but post this amusing (at least for the viewer) billboard advertising an alum spray for cuts. Poor guy. Looks like he needs to change his razor--his wife probably has been using it, or at least that's what my husband says if his razor is dull.
