Caught a glimpse of this fellow across the way.... I could use some roof-shoveling, too. Belgrade had a major snowstorm over the weekend....

Clock tower on Union Station and the gate at Seattle's International District. And a fire escape, thrown in for good measure.

SKYWATCH FRIDAY--A room with a view

Not much of a sky at all here, but it is there! And what a view of the sky and the city the people in this 'spacecraft' apartment must have....I would love to go up there and have a look. It has to be better than this other room with a view.

ABC Wednesday--"V" is for "Vane"

N, S, E, and W are the letters I grew up seeing on a weather vane, but since I've been living in Serbia, I have to get used to seeing Cyrillic letters for 'sever', jug', 'istok', and 'zapad', which stand for north, south, east, and west respectively. In Cyrillic they would be: С, Ј, И, and З, and so they are here on this vane! And in Serbian, weather vane is: vetrokaz, so that's another "V".

SKYWATCH ---going up

There may be an economic crisis, but new buildings are sprouting up all over Belgrade. In the background here you can see the rooftops of older buildings (plus, of course a satellite dish...) and the hook from a crane on an adjacent construction site. Office building, apartments? I'll wait and see.

SKYWATCH FRIDAY --Mama stork cools baby

This is a mother stork who appeared to be cooling her baby (babies, perhaps; but I only saw one) by beating her wings furiously above their nest. Storks are said to bring good luck to the house they nest on.

ABC Wednesday :"O" is for "Overdue"

I have admired this building, which was the Belgrade Insurance Association, for years and years. It's absolutely monumental, and is an architectural pearl, not just for Belgrade, but for all of Europe. It's been long overdue for a renovation, the last one having been in 1907, and there were speculations whether or not this would actually happen.

Sometime next year (Belgrade time...could be later...) the building is finally supposed to get a facelift, which will cost about 1 million euros. This will include restauration of the facade, a new roof (presumably in the same style), renovation of exterior carpentry and metalworks, as well as reinforcement of the structure. The statues too will be restored, as will the terraces. Two domes, destroyed during the Second World War, will be reconstructed.


Not foreseen is restauration of its interior. I found some photos on Google, and have written to the Tourist Agency here to see if it can be visited, for the photos of the interior I saw showed tourists, and the interior looks very, very well-preserved. If I get in, you'll see!

Theme Day--'Empty" and ABC Wednesday "X" is for 'xyloid'!

This future floating restaurant or cafe is pretty empty now, and I hope that it will be full when opened! I'm doing a double post today for ABC Wednesday's X and for Theme Day=Empty. "Xyloid" means "relating to wood."

Zen in Zemun

A recent trip up a hill in Zemun yielded this 'Zen' shot. The pieces of bricks and concrete were placed there, and blend in nicely with the three different kinds of tile roofs in the background.

Up on the Roof!

I was walking downtown the other day, and heard someone whistle and shout 'Alo!" It's been ages since I've been whistled at in the street (or anywhere else for that matter!) so I looked up and saw this roofer waving at me. I did what any other photo blogger would do, and here is the result. I'm not sure how much his 'security' rope would help him if he slips....

Roof tiles

Came across these carefully stacked roof tiles in a town not far away. They're waiting to be put back on the roof of a house that's having some repair done. I like it when people make an attempt to keep the original building materials on old houses, insofar as possible. Thrifty and pretty at the same time.

At the Snail's

This facade in Zemun has attracted me for such a long time. Originally I had just passed along the right side of this building, and had photographed the rooftop (saving that for another post). Recently, I looked up at the part facing the corner, and discovered the inscription "Kod Puža" or "At the snail's". I have no idea of the history of this building. I Googled it, but nothing, so I will have to return to ask around. It is such a beautiful facade, and I hate to see it falling apart. Notice the initial "E" on the right of the top photo. Was the original building's owner named "Escargot"? :<)

I was originally going to save this for ABC Wednesday's "P," since 'P" would not only have been for ""Puž," but also for "Pekara Petrovic" (Petrovic's bakery) written in Cyrillic below. I have a fragrant "P" for you tomorrow.

Almost symmetrical

The ground floor of this building is a "bistro-baked goods" shop in Pančevo, a half-hour drive from Belgrade. I was struck by the building's symmetry (or almost!) and that it looks a bit like a movie set. Looks like "things go better with Coke" here, too.
