WEEKEND REFLECTION--"Shades" of John Lennon

Serbian inventor, mechanical and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla looks quite dashing in these John Lennon-style shades on a poster on the door of an optician's shop downtown. Looks like he's even been kissed, too.

One last stab

From early fall to late spring and sometimes like now a bit beyond, villagers come to Belgrade to sell wool sweaters, socks, and caps. They're wonderfully warm, and generally not so expensive. They make great souvenirs. This man is trying one last time, or so I imagine, to sell his wares rather than keep them for next year.

The town of Sirogojno (SEE-ro-goy-no) is famous for its fabulous sweaters. Unlike this man's, they're quite pricey, but just about everyone I know who lives here for a while has splurged on one, this writer included. Here's a link.

Sweet and tart

It's been warm and so I treated myself to a lemonade, instead of my usual cappuccino. Look at all that sugar! I actually don't put sugar in my lemonade at all, so back it went when the waiter cleared the table.

Bought the snowdrops from the man I posted a few days ago.

SUNDAY Bridges--The Serbian Minister of Defense...He Who Opens Bridges!

As nearly every week, I was having coffee (this time outdoors, hurrah) with some friends, and who should stroll by but Dragan Ĺ utanovac, Serbian Minister of Defense. He's the one waving at me in the first photo and the one on the right in the second, still smiling. The gentleman in the lavender tie is the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Dmitar Salamatin.

And what does this have to do with bridges, you might ask?

Last year Mr. Ĺ utanovac opened a bridge in Mazarac, Serbia, and also one in Svilajnac, which you can read about here and here.

Check out more bridge posts at Louis La Vache's SUNDAY BRIDGES.

Chimney Cakes

Have you ever eaten chimney cakes? I've seen them being made at village fairs in northern Serbia near the Hungarian border and also last November in Prague. They're good... Sweet dough is wrapped around a wooden cylinder and then either baked or fried (baked here), then coated with your favorite topping...chocolate, hazelnut, walnut, cinnamon...or a combination of those.

Look both ways.

Not easy for old people around town, but the city is slowly adding sloped sidewalks for easier ascent/descent of wheelchairs and carts. This elderly lady never looked right or left as she crossed the street and despite a bus's (after this one) loud honking.

She seems to have a load of firewood in her little cart. Again, this photo was taken before our big snow. I'm sure her firewood came in handy.

ABC WEDNESDAY "E" is for "eliminated"

Recycle time. I came across a huge truckload of these colorful cardboard file boxes that were being tossed. Guess another business has gone (finally) computerized and doesn't need paper files much anymore.

Somehow file storage just isn't so pretty on your hard drive, but files sure do take up less space.

Come on over, neighbor!

Caught a glimpse of this fellow across the way.... I could use some roof-shoveling, too. Belgrade had a major snowstorm over the weekend....

And here's a fun video you must watch if you've ever had to dig your car out of the snow...

Won't you please buy my flowers?

It was just above freezing late the other night when I walked with my friend downtown. We passed this elderly man selling flowers and couldn't resist. She bought one of his fresh bouquets and I bought a dried arrangement.

Doesn't he have the sweetest face?

ABC WEDNESDAY--"x" is for "Xerasia"

"Xerasia" is defined as a 'condition of the hair characterized by dryness and brittleness.'

This girl's lovely red hair is definitely not brittle and dry, and that's why I whirled around to take her photo. However, it looks like the mannequin observing her doesn't have to worry about suffering from xerasia....

ABC Wednesday--"V" is for "very visible"

There are some days when I can do hip shots and not be seen, and others where I'm certain I might have been seen. I was far away from these ladies and this is a cropped photo taken with a wide angle, so I'm not sure they're really looking at me...or maybe they are. But how about that guy and the lady in the background? I think they may be looking at these fashionably dressed ladies...

Maybe I was Very Visible.

ABC WEDNESDAY "Q" is for "quotation"

Had dinner with my good friend the other night at Tri šešira (Three Hats) restaurant in Skadarlija, Belgrade's Bohemian quarter. My finger is never far from the shutter button, and I snapped this candle, which brought to mind a quotation attributed to Prince Gautama Siddhartha, known as Buddha, founder of Buddhism (5th century BC):

"Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. "

How true. This past year I've shared happiness with my family in the US and some good friends from my student days in France. Although another Buddha quote says, "Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment," I can't help but look forward to sharing more happiness with others I haven't seen for a long time.

Three on a Bench

Although Belgrade is a large, cosmopolitan city where older people (at least) still try to 'dress up' when they go out, you still see people in downtown areas rather casually dressed, as these three fellows. I love the ties on the man's pants on the left.

This was a hip shot, as was this one from long ago, of three ladies on a bench.

What do you think these three men are talking about?

ABC Wednesday "Y" is for "Yikes! I've been shot!"

It had to happen. I knew I'd been taking chances...photographing ladies in bikinis, people unaware in the bus, sleeping in the park....and now I've been shot.

The story is this: I was attracted to the Perrier 'bush' (it's plastic) and went to take a photo. Then I thought it was ironic that the sign says "I love juice," which of course Perrier is not. That was to be my photo.

I get home, upload the photo, touch up the contrast, adjust the lighting, and lo and behold, a sniper!

He must have been shooting blanks...didn't feel a thing.

But, just between you and me, don't you think it looks like Eric?

See what others have been shooting at ABC WEDNESDAY.

ABC Wednesday "N" is for "Never closed"

The store you see, open round-the-clock, is a 'Sarajevo Burek' place where you can buy yummy burek all day and all night. The burek you see when you click on the link isn't the Sarajevo kind, which is similar, but rolled and not baked in a round pan.

And that's a pretty cool car, too, though I do not know what it is. Anyone? Anyone?

van Gogh's terrace

Well, not really, of course, but Vincent might have felt at home here with all these sunflowers. Caught this shot on Saturday while walking from one museum to the next while participating in SlowArt Day. As you can see, I found my own serendipitous art.

The snoozer with a sneeze?

Ah, spring. With the flowers and the sun come allergies, for some of us. I wonder if this fellow has allergies...not too many flowers near him, but he has strategically placed his Kleenex in case he gets that tickly feeling while he's soaking up some rays, or maybe just warming himself up, since it was rather cool when I took this photo a short while ago. Achoo.

FANCY NAILS

Sneaked this shot of a girl with fancy nails, totally oblivious to me in the bus. I can't help but wonder how she types or texts with t...
