Sunday Bridges--The Bridge Between

If you saw last Sunday's post, you 'll know that for a short while I'll be posting bridges from an exhibit currently taking place on Belgrade's pedestrian street, Knez Mihailova.

If I am not mistaken (and yes, it's been known to happen), this must be the bridge built by the Germans after they destroyed King Alexander 1st's bridge, built in 1934 and destroyed in 1941. The post card reads "Zemun", which at the time extended along the Sava River to include the Old Fairgrounds, which was turned into a concentration camp. This bridge was undoubtedly used to allegedly transport Jews to a new site on the other side of Belgrade, but if you check this link, you'll see what really happened as they crossed this bridge and part of the city.

King Alexander's Bridge was rebuilt after the war and later replaced by the present-day Branko's Bridge.

Oh, how many knick-knacks I've had in my life.... and now I'm trying to get rid of them all, keeping only the most precious, but which ones....?

Yankee, go home! (Who, me?)

No offense taken, of course, since the writer is undoubtedly a member of the Serbian Radical Party, a far-right, ultra-nationalistic party founded in 1991, whose leader, Vojislav Šešelj (name in Cyrillic painted on the left of the wall), has been under trial in The Hague for war crimes since 1993.

And besides, after 33 years here, I am home.

Coincidence

I did a double-take the other day while cruising the portal at our mother site when I saw this door, located in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn. It certainly is a coincidence, for this door that I'd photographed a few days before in Belgrade's nearby municipality of Zemun looks very similar.

SUNDAY BRIDGES -The bridge to Lido Beach

It's nearly the end of the summer, but it's still hot here. Many people who could not get away to a big beach this summer (or even if they did) like to spend a day on one of Belgrade's riverbank beaches. Lido Beach is located on Great War Island and every summer the Municipality of Zemun sets up a pontoon bridge across this section of the Danube for sunbathers to reach the island.

Enjoy the moment

The alternate title for this post could have been "Before Take-off," since my friend is leaving Belgrade today for NYC where she lives. I took this photo when she and I were having a (very) cool drink in Zemun, one of Belgrade's adjacent municipalities.

Unlike the dragonfly I posted here a short while back, this fellow stayed put a long time, as if enjoying the view.

I think we should all do this. I do now. Today, 5 years ago today, I finished an eight-month chemotherapy treatment here in Belgrade for Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which I never suspected I had until it was fortunately detected early through my yearly physical. So far, so good.

One never knows how many days one has, so I try to take advantage of every single one.

This fellow is painting white poles with red stripes on Venecija (Venice), a restaurant in Zemun. I think he'd have done well to use some masking tape...

His poor foot

If this photo looks familiar, it is, since it was accidentally posted on Theme Day for a short while. That is what happens when you try to use scheduled posting late at night...

This foot belongs to an old fellow seated on a bench next to where I was sitting. I think he should soak his foot and pumice off the dead skin, since here so far there isn't anything like what Jilly of Menton Daily Photo posted the other day. Click and see!

Sunday Bridges--A sunken bridge

Last Sunday, Kim of Seattle Daily Photo showed us two floating bridges. Not to be outdone, I now show you one sunken bridge! Recent floodwaters have submerged this bridge that leads to the fisherman's society boat in Zemun. There are people out there, so I guess they ferry back and forth!

Why is this bank smiling? I don't know, except perhaps it's happy I stopped to take its photo. Not along ago I captured another smiley on a bus and even longer ago one on a trip to California.

ABC Wednesday 'J' is for 'Jagged'

While walking in Zemun (ZAY-moon), a nearby municipality of Belgrade, I came upon this old door with several glass panes. Actually, there had been several glass panes, but the others were completely gone, and all that remained of this one was some jagged, very old glass. I liked shapes and textures, so I took a photo for you to see, too.

Today is also the 11th anniversary of the NATO bombing of Serbia, which I showed you last year. Many windows were shattered at that time.

Playing with my food again

I did play with my food again, just as I did last October, but this time I had the patience to wait until I was all done with it. Here on my plate is an artistic arrangement of the remains of some small, fried fish called girice (GEEr-eet-say) that I enjoyed in typical American style with a glass of Coke. I looked up girice on the Internet, and they seem to be called picarel, or whitebait smelts. Google those words under 'images' and you'll see. Whatever they're called, they're good.

A Touch of Italy in Belgrade

Yesterday I treated you to a bright yellow wall and window, Mexican style, and now we have here a display that reminds me of windows/walls I have seen on back streets of some Italian cities I've visited. Once again, these windows come to you courtesy of Belgrade's adjacent municipality of Zemun.

South of the Border in Belgrade

Yes, this really is Belgrade, and not another photo from my California trip this summer. This cheery lemon-colored wall I found in Zemun, one of Belgrade's adjacent municipalities. Nice, healthy-looking cacti, too!

Zen in Zemun

A recent trip up a hill in Zemun yielded this 'Zen' shot. The pieces of bricks and concrete were placed there, and blend in nicely with the three different kinds of tile roofs in the background.

Sneakin' one on the sly?

Frikom (FREE-kom) is a popular brand of ice cream here. Most of their flavors are really good, and this vendor was sampling his own wares. Am I alone in thinking he bears a striking resemblance to Bill Clinton?
