"You painted for nothing...."

It's so disrespectful to deface property like in the above photo. The sign reads "You painted for nothing", which in Serbian is written as below, first in the Cyrillic alphabet and then the Latin one:

ЏАБE СТЕ КРЕЧИЛИ

DŽABE STE KREČILI

I think the writer should spend or have spent a little more time in school....he/she has mixed up both alphabets. Most of the writing is in the Cyrillic alphabet, and the letter for the R should be a P.

Art and graffiti....

Here's another cow, like I showed you here. Behind her is the now and for a long time already defunct "Beograd" department store, one of a former state-owned chain. I remember shopping for baby clothes there...long, long ago.

Yankee, go home! (Who, me?)

No offense taken, of course, since the writer is undoubtedly a member of the Serbian Radical Party, a far-right, ultra-nationalistic party founded in 1991, whose leader, Vojislav Šešelj (name in Cyrillic painted on the left of the wall), has been under trial in The Hague for war crimes since 1993.

And besides, after 33 years here, I am home.

Sunday Bridges--before and after

One day fresh paint, next day (or almost) graffiti. This is the fate of many walls in big cities, like this one under a bridge over a highway in Belgrade.

Check out Louis La Vache's Sunday Bridges at his blog!

Al Capone lives...sort of.

Al Capone, the notorious American gangster, would have been 111 this year. This mural is one of many murals (not all of gangsters!) that adorn a number of Belgrade walls. Is it art or defacement? You decide.
By the way, the writing around him says the following:
We change years, we change our dreams, we change pens, we change weapons,we change our minds, we change our racketeering, we change girlfriends, we change money; but never our friends!

Odd man out

Another street artist today, perhaps one more to your liking. He's categorizing his photos, and seems to have more Belgrade scenes than nudes... I didn't stick around long enough to see which painting went first.

Women's rights

With several of my past photos having been taken out my automobile window, you must think I spend my waking hours in a car. I was actually a passenger when I took this photo. Belgrade Boys are a particular group of Red Star soccer team fans gone bad...hooligans in the worst sense, but this blog isn't the place to go into that. Google if you like.

Not a group to emulate, and I can only hope that the 'girls' simply wanted a voice.

Say what?

I'm afraid there's not much respect for public property here, as can be seen from this monument dating from 1961, when it honored the first conference of non-aligned countries. It was restored in 1989 for the ninth conference, but since then....

What do you believe?

This graffiti is on one of the side entrances to Saint Marko's church downtown, and reads, "What do you believe?"

Dear Readers, I apologize that I had to change my settings not to allow anonymous comments, since I've recently been visited by a rant-and-raver. The Internet's a wide territory, and I'm sure that person will find another outlet to vent his/her dissatisfaction. These City Daily Photo blogs are for enjoyment and fun, and are not to be used as a soapbox.

Shout it from the rooftops!

Whether you shout it from the rooftops or from a bridge, tell him/her you're in love! "I love you, Nemanja" is what Tina has written on the walkway under Branko's Bridge (featured in my first post last March.) Maybe that's Nemanja (NAY-mahn-yah) down there fishing.

ABC Wednesday: Vandals or virtuosos?

While walking along the Sava a couple weeks ago, I saw these young guys painting a wall white. How nice, I thought, and went over closer to congratulate them on their civic pride. However, when I drew closer, the one really was merely creating a new "canvas," while the other was testing his spray paint cans to decorate the new surface with their own graffiti. Last Wednesday while checking out my citymates' Belgrade blogs, I saw that Vlada at http://fotkapofotka.blogspot.com/ had posted a photo of them too, taken a bit later that same day (May 28th), so check out the "vandals' or virtuosos'" work.

Where's Waldo?

I hadn't started this blog when it was theme day for wall art/graffiti, but I like this photo, so I'll post it now rather than wait until the same theme comes around again. It reminds me of those "Where's Waldo?" books, which are sold in Serbia as "Gde je Gile?" (Guh-DAY yeh GEE-lay)

TWILIGHT TIME

Hi! I haven't posted for six weeks; been in the US but am now back in Belgrade.  I am going to take a possibly long break from photoblo...
