SKYWATCH -- Black and White

In contrast to yesterday's colorful post, here's another view of the statue of The Victor in Kalemegdan Park in black and white. These stairs that I am standing on lead down to the part of the park known simply as lower Kalemegdan that lies outside the fortress walls.

Closing shop

From my car window, I caught this jeweler putting away his wares for the night.

WEEKEND REFLECTION--the water glass

Not Perrier or even any sparkling water; just ordinary tap bubbles.

SUNDAY BRIDGES--black and white

Belgrade's newest bridge, the Bridge Over Ada, has something in common with the Eiffel Tower....you can see it from just about anywhere in the city.

Shadows

Took this the other day when it was sunny....oh, how pleased I am that spring is around the corner....

I like this photo, but I think it might be a bit 'busy'....too many details. What do you think?

SKYWATCH--shades of Edgar Allan Poe

Can you hear the crack of thunder and see the flash of lightning? There wasn't any, of course, since this is a winter photo and those phenomena usually don't occur in the winter. Perhaps this crow, perched on a very gnarled tree, reminds you of this previous post of mine?

This does remind me of something Edgar Allan Poe might have used as an illustration for one of his stories or poems.

Run from the Devil?

I accompanied a friend to a doctor's visit the other week and saw this sign while we were waiting. It was pretty easy to figure out that the top running figure was running away from fire, but the lower one, what was he trying to escape from? The Devil? A bull? Run like the devil from a bull?

Since there's little chance of running into a bull in a hospital corridor (I'll not mention the Devil), I asked a passing nurse.

"That's a bomb," she replied. "The bomb shelter is to the right."

Oh.

Weekend Reflection: Sit a while...

It may be a cold sit on this park bench, but sometimes it's good to listen to the Buddhist advice: "Don't just do something; sit there."

Today is Serbian New Year. Perhaps the time to make a resolution to slow down and just sit?

Sunday Bridges--Prague

Short of a Belgrade bridge this week, so here is a view from a bridge of St. Vitus' Cathedral in Prague, where I was in early November for a wedding.

ABC WEDNESDAY...."N" is for "near"

Near is where I was to these two Seattle policemen. Looks like they're well-equipped, though the fellow on the right needs a new pair of trousers.

It's there, but it's not....essence of bridge.

THEME DAY--Mystery object

Hmmm...what's this? It it easy to figure out or not? Arrived here in the US (see yesterday's post) and was pleased to see my son-in-law had taken so many great shots with his new Nikon D90 that he purchased when I was here the last time. This Mystery Object is one of his photos.

Not clear to me whether we're supposed to tell what this 'mystery object' is....so I've typed the answer in teeny-tiny print below.

It's an open magazine on a mirror...

ABC WEDNESDAY--"K" is for "Kin"

I showed you Baka Jelka's hands before. Here they are again, holding her great-granddaughter Mila. Baka Jelka (Yel-ka) is my daughter-in-law's grandmother, and she is so, so proud....

More Turkish pastries...and a lot of food coloring...

Do these Turkish pastries, at least the colored ones, look good to you? I don't think I'd try them...too much food coloring..., but maybe they're just to attract your attention, as they did mine for this photo.

You can sample with your eyes much better pastries in this other shop that I showed you before.

ABC WEDNESDAY--"E" is for "eternal"

Some people believe that nothing is eternal, that nothing lasts forever. It's true that material things, no matter how indestructible they seem, one day will fall apart, erode away, disintegrate; in short, disappear. Sooner or later people disappear too, no matter how much we want them to be with us forever. Today marks the day my husband suffered a stroke that led to his leaving us much too soon. I'd like to think that it was only his physical self that is gone, and that he is somehow still around. Part of him lives on in his baby granddaughter, Mila, who by coincidence, turns one month old today. Above are my son and daughter-in-law's wedding rings, dangling from Mila's toes. May they, and my daughter and her husband, all live long and happy lives.

Safe from the birdie...

Was sitting at a cafe with some friends the other day and looked up and saw this sparrow's feet. Good thing the canvas was between him and us...just in case he, uh, did something....

SUNDAY BRIDGES All in the family....

Isn't this a great shot? Nope, not patting myself on the back. This shot from under the Aurora Bridge was taken by my son-in-law with his new D90. Pimped a little in GIMP, a photo imaging program.

Not bad, eh?

Reflections Weekend--I want one....

Oh, I want one, too. This is my friend Jenny and her husband Chris (discreetly on the left) and Jenny's, yes, Jenny's alone, 1959 Rambler Metropolitan.

I want one.

Do you remember Jenny and Chris from this photo?

ABC WEDNESDAY "O" is for "old"

I pulled over to take this photo of these shutters and matching moss on this old house near Kopachuck Park in Washington state.

There's even a matching daffodil.

Lemme in!

This pigeon has been hanging around my window ever since the snow fell....I think he wants in, but sorry, no chance.
