WEEKEND REFLECTION--"Shades" of John Lennon

Serbian inventor, mechanical and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla looks quite dashing in these John Lennon-style shades on a poster on the door of an optician's shop downtown. Looks like he's even been kissed, too.

WEEKEND REFLECTION--Can Alice be far behind?

Ah, the White Rabbit. Or maybe just a white rabbit. I know it's really the latter, since this little fellow was shown to you before with his owner, who takes him for a walk (and here I guess a run) every day.

Didn't see any blond, long-haired little girl in hot pursuit. Just the reflection of the lady in the door.

Renovation at last

In 2009 I posted a photo of this passageway off of Knez Mihailova and wished someone would restore it, for it contains beautiful artwork. My wish has been granted.

This Secessionist-style passageway, begun in 1889 and finished in 1912, named after politician Nikola Spasić whose statue I showed you here, will be restored over a two-month period and will then link Belgrade's pedestrian street to one behind it.

Now I'm wishing that the building in still another post of mine will be restored as well.

Laundry day

I'm always looking for open doorways that lead into courtyards and unexpected finds. I like the colors on this laundry. For those of you who may not know, the 'sheet' in the middle with a diamond shape cut out is a quilt cover...just push the quilt through and adjust!

Big Brother...

...is watching you... Have you been naughty or nice this year? Oh, wait...that's Santa. Well, he's probably watching, too.

Interesting that this sign is in English, not in Serbian!

"On the street where you live..."

Like some photobloggers, I often get requests to take a photo of some special place. Last March when I was in the US for an extended stay, Diego, a young man from Bogota, Colombia, wrote to say "...Two years ago I met a girl from Beograd, she lives in that street (Admirala Geprata 9), she is the most wonderful girl I've ever met...". Now that I'm back, I'm finally able to honor Diego's request with this photo of #9!

And just who was "Admiral Geprat"? Here's what I found: Emile Paul Guepratte was largely responsible for the reorganization and transport of the Serbian army from Greece in WWI. The Allies planned to relocate the Serbian army and all patients from field hospitals in Corfu --9,710 of them--in order to provide better care and recovery in hospitals in Northern Africa, France, and Corsica. In 1916, a total of 7,459 patients and 2,458 recruits, along with 1,500 refugees, totaling in all 11,417 Serbs, were transferred, largely thanks to Admiral Guepratte, whose kindness earned him the nickname "Serbian Mother".

And for you, Diego, here is the song from My Fair Lady, On the Street Where You Live.

No more blank walls....or gates....

Street art is popular here, as it is in many cities, as you saw in yesterday's post. This art on a preschool's gate and inside wall was most likely created by the kids (okay, the gate...) and their teachers (the wall, maybe!) and was not the result of a casual talented passer-by. Nonetheless, it brightens up the surroundings!

ABC Wednesday "G" is for "golden"

Not real gold, nor even some kind of metal, or even a Golden Retriever. This dog, painted a golden yellow, adorns a large gate on a residence in downtown Belgrade. I believe that in art dogs lying down mean faithfulness, but am not sure. Anybody know?

Check out other G's on ABC WEDNESDAY.

Aquarius gone, now Pisces

Aquarius the Water Bearer (my sign) has departed and was replaced by Pisces, the fish. I was going to list a few of Pisces' characteristics, but the ones I read could have easily been mine, too.... This carved fish is one of two on a doorway downtown.

What sign are you, and do you believe in zodiac signs?

ABC WEDNESDAY --"E" is for "Exhibit"

Excellent exhibit....a very nostalgic one, of photographs from older Belgrade....

You can see that Branko's Bridge looks pretty much the same right here, but there's no beach now.

ABC WEDNESDAY "A" is for "arch, antiqued"

Kalemegdan Park is full of archways, and here is one close to The Victor statue. I 'antiqued' it for you, too.

Check out other A's on ABC WEDNESDAY.

ABC Wednesday--"U" is for "unsettling"

I like this floor pattern in downtown hallway where a friend lives, I really do, but I find it somewhat unsettling to walk on...which way are those little blocks going to tumble? :)

On the floor, but in the air

Through a glass doorway I spied these swallows chasing a butterfly....I think they've been chasing it for some time....

Hey! Serbia won the Davis Cup yesterday, beating nine-time winner France 3-2!

Hound in the hoosegow

This dog looked after Bibi and me so forlornly as we passed by him, all locked up in the 'hoosegow.' If you're not familiar with this word, which my grandfather loved to use, check out its meaning right here.

Note: He was in there with some workers, who were painting the interior of what will probably be a small shop.

Water-related

It's been a hot summer, so I am ending the month of August with a water-related post. Going clockwise from the top left: a statue in New Belgrade; a small artwork called "The Sava and the Danube" (two rivers kissing!); a mermaid (though I think those look like feathers...) door handle; and one of the fountains on Belgrade's Bohemian District, Skadarlija.

ABC WEDNESDAY "F" is for "Found"

On another ABC WEDNESDAY not so long ago, I posted these shoes and wondered who would wear them. Now I know. I saw this young saleswoman in a doorway of a dress shop wearing none other than those very high heels.

Found 'em, and now I know who wears 'em!

Check out other F's on ABC WEDNESDAY.

P.S. Someone asked about the bottle and the pipe. The pipe comes from the air conditioner, which drips into the pipe and then into the bottle, which is placed there and occasionally emptied so the sidewalk doesn't get all wet!

Coincidence

I did a double-take the other day while cruising the portal at our mother site when I saw this door, located in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn. It certainly is a coincidence, for this door that I'd photographed a few days before in Belgrade's nearby municipality of Zemun looks very similar.

126

This old mailbox on a garden gate in a town not far from Belgrade caught my eye. The number 42 seems to have been painted/etched on three times, hence the title for this post.

SUNDAY BRIDGES--an archway and a bridge

This a photo from last spring, but I need to 'shoot' more bridges... This is an archway in Kalemegdan Park on the other side of which is a wooden bridge. You can see its railing on the left!

Check out other bridges on Louis La Vache's Sunday Bridges.

ABC Wednesday 'S'' is for 'Smiley'

Why is this bank smiling? I don't know, except perhaps it's happy I stopped to take its photo. Not along ago I captured another smiley on a bus and even longer ago one on a trip to California.
Hope you are smiling today.

Check out some other S's on ABC WEDNESDAY.

NO SITTING TODAY

I came across these chairs and tables at a fast-food place, but because everything was wet, there were no sit-down diners. Liked the colors....
